META tags

Most search engines use META tags in pages to rank pages by relevancy of certain words and how they relate to your web page. The addition of meta tags to your page are essential if you plan on submiting your site to popular search engines.

There are two types of meta tags that should always be included in the HEAD section of the page; a description and keyword list.

Keywords

When a person goes to a search engine and searches for a specific topic, like roller coasters, sites that have "roller coasters", "roller", and "coasters" as keywords for their page will be displayed as results. Using the most relevant keywords for your site is important.

Avoid commom words for your page's keywords. When a person searches using commom words they will get a huge number of results. Chances are your site will be listed towards the bottom of the list. The purpose of keywords is to target words that will bring people to your site as opposed to other people's sites.

A basic keyword meta tag should look like this:

<meta name="keywords" content="keyword, keyword 2">

Description

When a visitor sees a list of links that match their keywords, the description of your page may help it outshine the competition. Your description should include a VERY brief summary of your page and a few keywords.

A basic description meta tag should look like this:

<meta name="description" content="My site description.">
